A number of Australian men who were prescribed a "sildenafil" for erectile dysfunction (ED) were reported to have suffered adverse effects.
"This is a serious and potentially fatal problem in which a large number of men have died," said Mr Peter Lee, the chief executive officer of Australia's male sexual health and sexual wellbeing group,. "Men who have been advised to stop taking sildenafil should seek medical advice."
The drugs were originally used as a treatment for impotence, and are the only ED drugs approved by the Australian Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA).
Viagra, the first of the erectile dysfunction drugs, was originally approved as a treatment for impotence by Pfizer in 1998, and was then approved by the FDA as a new treatment for erectile dysfunction in 2003.
But the drugs were never approved for use in Australia. In April 2007, the Australian Government announced a "sildenafil" price increase, and the drug has now been approved for sale in more than 90 countries.

"These drugs are not approved for the treatment of ED, but they have serious side effects, and there is a risk that this could happen to men who have not taken the medicine for a while," said Mr Lee.
